Online Learning and Instructional Technology Services (OLITS) at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library offers a variety of professional development training to support the online faculty of USFSP. The framework for professional development is based on two distinct yet inseparable categories: pedagogy and technology.
Pedagogy workshops focus on best practices in online learning using adult learning theory. Topics range from improving academic integrity, increasing levels of student engagement, to creating valid assessments that align with course objectives. The workshops emphasize grounded, research-based theories to improve the students’ learning experiences and improve outcomes.
Technology workshops concentrate on the software used to enhance the delivery and engagement of online learning. Topics include alternatives to PowerPoint, interactive polling software, and iPad apps for education just to name a few.
Workshops are designed for our busy faculty in one-hour blocks as face-to-face training in the OLITS area on the second floor of the library, POY219 during various days and times throughout the semester. OLITS is also beginning to convert many of these workshops to make them available for online delivery. For details about online workshop availability, contact Otis Wilder (727-873-4226, firstname.lastname@example.org).

Professional Development Stipend Program
USF St. Petersburg recognizes that in this arena of learning, “one size does not fit all.” USF St. Petersburg holds as a high value the faculty-student relationship that comes from shared intellectual endeavor. We also want to offer a variety of ways and means that our students can achieve their educational objectives. In addition, faculty members who wish to expand their pedagogical repertoire should be provided with appropriate incentives and opportunities to do so in support of both their own professional goals and of the university’s strategic goals.
As a result, OLITS, the Office of Academic Affairs and with the support of the Deans, has established a multi-pronged program for the development and support of distance/online learning courses and course development. For more information please take a minute to review the USFSP Distance Learning Course Development Program document.
